A setting we never turned on had been asking AI assistants not to read our site. It takes a minute to check whether yours is doing the same.

In short

  • The robots.txt your website serves is not always the one you or your developer wrote. Hosting platforms are allowed to add to it.
  • Check by opening yourbusiness.com.au/robots.txt and looking for the word Disallow under GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended.
  • Blocking AI crawlers is a reasonable decision to make. Ours had been made for us, and we did not know.
